Pato Real is the room with a point of view. A French door opens straight onto the volcanic-stone patio at the back of the Casa Protea manor, and from the moment you cross the threshold, the design takes hold — hunter green chairs, a deep burgundy rug, curtains in the same wine red, and a wall hung with antique prints of the mallard ducks the room takes its name from. It's the most visually striking suite at Malaca, and it earns the title without trying. The bed is a 180 × 200 cm European King — what Americans call a queen — set on a memory foam mattress and dressed in linen, with an en-suite bath off the room. The window faces north, so the light arrives even and soft and stays that way all day.
Breakfast is yours to take or skip — you'll choose at booking. When you take it, you'll often find it set just outside your door, on the volcanic-stone patio among the hydrangea beds, the daisies, and the Azorean lemon trees, or inside in the manor's dining room when the weather asks for walls. Bread still warm. Fruit from the kitchen garden. Eggs from our own hens. Good coffee. Dinner has its own rhythm here. Some nights the dining room is set for our staying guests — about three a week — for dinner from our kitchen. Other nights it belongs to a cooking class, where participants sit down to the meal they spent the afternoon preparing, or to a Regenerative Farm Tour group ending the walk at a vegetarian table. Guests can join either the cooking class or the Regenerative Farm Tour by booking the experience alongside the stay. The wellness offerings — sauna, jacuzzi, cold plunge — wait in the outdoor spa garden between Casa Protea and Casa Madeira, by appointment, alongside massage, bodywork, yoga, and movement, all of it just for our guests.
Pato Real is the middle of our three Casa Protea suites — more generous than Flores, more contained than Vista do Mar — and its proximity to the back garden is what guests remember. Step through the French door and the patio is right there, the hydrangea hedges close enough to touch, the lemon trees holding the corners of the view. The Atlantic stretches out to the south from the front patio, open ocean to the horizon. Pato Real sleeps two, with a private en-suite bath and full run of the manor's gardens, patios, and grounds. It's the suite for couples who want a room with character — design that's been thought about — and a doorway that opens onto the garden rather than down a corridor. For an east-and-north corner suite, see Flores. For the ocean view, see Vista do Mar. For a fully self-contained villa for two, see Casa Madeira Bungalow.
