What Is Regenerative Agriculture? A Plain-English Guide

Regenerative agriculture isn't a single technique — it's a way of farming that leaves the land healthier than it found it. Here's what it means in practice on a working farm in the Azores.

The short version: regenerative agriculture is farming that improves the land it works on. Soil gets healthier. Biodiversity increases. Water cycles improve. Carbon goes back into the ground instead of into the atmosphere. The farm becomes more productive over time, not less. The longer version — the one worth understanding — is where it gets interesting.

A farm that gives back more than it takes

The Problem with the Way Most Food is Grown

Modern industrial agriculture is extractive by design. It treats soil like a substrate, plants like inputs, and the land like a factory floor. Fields are cleared down to one crop. Synthetic fertilizers replace the nutrients the plants would have built themselves. Pesticides handle the insects that would have been controlled by birds or other insects in a balanced system. Heavy tillage breaks the soil structure year after year.

The result is exhausted soil, collapsing biodiversity, water tables under stress, and farms that need more chemical input each year just to keep producing what they produced the year before. It's a model that works on a quarterly horizon and fails on a generational one.

What Regenerative Agriculture Actually Looks Like

Regenerative agriculture flips the model. The goal isn't extraction — it's the opposite. Every practice in the system is designed to leave the land more capable than the season before. In practice, that comes down to four things.

Living soil. Cover crops, compost, and minimal tillage keep the soil microbiome alive. Healthy soil isn't just dirt — it's a dense community of fungi, bacteria, and microorganisms that feed plants, hold water, and lock carbon underground. When the soil is alive, the farm needs far less from outside it.

Biodiversity above and below ground. Multiple species growing together — what's sometimes called polyculture, or in our case, food forest design — creates resilience. If one crop struggles, the system keeps producing. Pests struggle to take hold because the environment isn't a single buffet. Birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects show up because there's a reason to.

Closed loops. Animals fertilize the land. Food waste becomes compost. Water is captured and reused. Pruning from one part of the farm becomes mulch for another. In a regenerative system, very little goes out that doesn't come back in.

Long-term thinking. A regenerative farmer plants trees they may never personally harvest from. They improve soil that will be more fertile in twenty years than it is today. The work is measured against decades, not seasons.
